Mavis Sunset

On my way home from work (and a stop at the camera store) I noticed the really nice sunset. I was not going to make it out of the city for a good view to take a photo. On my way north on Mavis I notice a large hill next to a small park.

I found a close parking spot and grabbed the camera and went over to and up the hill. Lots of brambles and nettles. Ouch! Set up the camera and powered it on... "No Card". Doh! Ran for the car, grabbed the CF card and sped back to the hill. Oy! The sun had already gone down on my first trip up the hill but I managed to get a nice glow and some really cool cloud patterns.

I did the merge in Photoshop as it tends to give the lowest noise and no banded colours in low light situations. The I tone mapped it with Photomatix. Unfortunately there were car headlights in two of the seven exposures which made some really ugly colour artifacts.

So I repeated the process leaving out those frames. Then I just put the second one as a bottom layer and erased the offending area on the top layer. A little sparing use of the dodge tool to correct for the brightness difference and perfect!
